2. Preparing for installation

Proper preparation is key to a successful DIY cabinet installation. Follow these steps to ensure your space is ready:

Measure your space

Accurate measurements prevent surprises during installation. Use a measuring tape to record:

  • Wall dimensions

  • Appliance locations

  • Window and door placements

  • Ceiling height

  • Other features such as electrical outlets and plumbing

Pro tip: For the most accurate wall-to-wall measurement, measure out 10 inches from one wall, make a mark, and then measure from that mark to the other wall. Add 10 inches back to your overall measurement. This ensures precise dimensions for wall to wall sections.

Visit our How to Choose the Right Cabinets guide for tips on selecting cabinets that fit your space perfectly.

Locate wall studs

Use a stud finder to identify and mark the location of wall studs. These will provide the necessary support for your cabinets.

Mark reference lines

Draw level lines on the wall to indicate:

  • The top of the base cabinets

  • The bottom of the upper cabinets

Double-check your lines using a level to ensure accuracy.

4. Installing base cabinets

Once the upper cabinets are secure, move on to the base cabinets. Here’s how:

Step 1: Locate the highest point on the floor

Use a laser level for accuracy. Mark 34.5 inches from the floor at the highest point and draw a level line across the wall. This will serve as the guide for the top of the base cabinets.

Step 2: Position corner cabinets

Start with the corner base cabinet. Use shims to adjust for uneven floors, ensuring the cabinet is level and plumb.

Step 3: Secure cabinets to the wall

Screw the corner cabinet into the wall studs, checking alignment with the reference lines. Continue with adjacent cabinets, connecting them and securing to the wall.

Step 4: Install filler strips and panels

Use filler strips to close any gaps between cabinets and walls. Attach panels to exposed cabinet sides for a polished look.

3. Installing upper cabinets

It’s best to install upper cabinets first to avoid working over the base cabinets. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Attach a support rail

Secure a temporary support rail along the wall below the bottom line of the upper cabinets. This will hold the cabinets in place during installation.

  • Set the support rail at 54 inches from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet for most standard cabinets.

  • For refrigerators, over-the-range, and microwave cabinets, set the height at 72 inches. For laundry room cabinets, set it at 60 inches.

Step 2: Start with corner cabinets

Begin with the corner cabinet, as it sets the foundation for the rest of the upper cabinets. Position the cabinet on the support rail, ensuring it’s level, and screw it into the wall studs.

Step 3: Add adjacent cabinets

Continue installing the remaining upper cabinets, connecting them with clamps. Use screws to secure the cabinets together and to the wall.

5. Adding finishing touches

The final steps bring your project together and ensure a professional finish:

Install cabinet hardware

Attach knobs and pulls to doors and drawers. Use a template to ensure consistent placement.

Secure countertops

Place countertops on the base cabinets and secure them according to manufacturer instructions.

Seal gaps

Use caulk to seal any gaps between cabinets, walls, or countertops for a seamless appearance.

6. Common DIY installation challenges and solutions

Even with careful planning, challenges can arise during installation. Here are some common issues and how to address them:

Uneven walls or floors

  • Solution: Use shims to adjust cabinets for a level installation.

Cabinets not aligning

  • Solution: Double-check measurements and use clamps to hold cabinets in place before securing.
